ISO 9001 · Wichita, KS

ISO 9001 consulting for Wichita, between two editions.

ISO 9001 certification in Wichita: first certificates, the 2026 transition, and companies that hold ISO 9001 beside AS9100. Led by an ISO 9001 lead auditor.

We are an active member of the Wichita Manufacturers Association, and we work on-site in Wichita whenever the work calls for it. If you see us at a WMA meeting, please come and introduce yourself. We would love to get to know you and your business.

Two editions of one standard, in the same building

Our Wichita hub page leads with AS9100 and covers when a customer's flow-down asks for ISO 9001 instead. This page is about a timing problem ISO 9001 creates in Wichita more than in almost any other market we cover, because so many Wichita quality systems are also aerospace systems, or are one customer away from becoming one.

AS9100D is built on ISO 9001:2015. It contains that edition's requirements in full and adds the aerospace layer on top. ISO 9001:2026 was published on September 16, 2026, and its aerospace counterpart has not been. The next AS9100 revision, renumbered IA9100, is still waiting on IAQG for both a publication date and a transition timeline (see our IA9100 tracker). For a period nobody can yet put a length on, the ISO 9001 text and the aerospace text will sit on different editions.

Three dates frame the decision. Every accredited ISO 9001:2015 certificate has to move to the 2026 edition by September 30, 2029. From March 31, 2028, new and initial accredited ISO 9001 certifications can only be issued to the 2026 edition. And in the US, ANAB has told certification bodies they may not issue ANAB-accredited ISO 9001:2026 certificates until ANAB has made its transition decision for them, with their declarations due by June 30, 2027 (the detail is on our ISO 9001:2026 transition tracker).

What to do depends on where you sit. ISO 9001 only, with no aerospace plans: transition on your normal audit cycle once your certification body is approved, because there is nothing to gain from rushing. ISO 9001 now, with AS9100 expected soon: if a customer is waiting for the AS9100 certificate, do that work first, since AS9100D is what aerospace purchase orders ask for today, then fold in the 2026 changes. Both certificates: one quality system, audited against two editions for a while. If you keep a separate ISO 9001 certificate, usually because a non-aerospace customer names it, that certificate follows the ISO 9001 deadline while the AS9100D certificate follows IAQG's.

There is one place Wichita's aerospace companies start ahead. The most widely cited change in ISO 9001:2026 is a new emphasis on quality culture and ethical behavior, and AS9100D already requires people to be aware of the importance of ethical behavior. IAQG's published draft of IA9100 points the same way. That does not make the transition a paperwork exercise, because separating risks from opportunities and evidencing leadership still take real work. It does mean the work should be built once, to serve both standards, rather than twice.

The manufacturing base here

Wichita carries 609 manufacturing establishments, and 87% of them employ fewer than 100 people (530 of them, per US Census County Business Patterns, 2023). That puts it 31st by small-manufacturer base among the 40 markets we cover.

107 aerospace product and parts establishments, about 16 times the national concentration, and roughly 30,400 aerospace manufacturing jobs. In Wichita, growing a machine shop usually means growing into an aerospace program, and the program arrives with AS9100.

What an engagement covers

  • Edition sequencing plan Which certificate moves first and against which deadline, with your certification body's own ISO 9001:2026 approval status checked rather than assumed.
  • First ISO 9001 certification A quality system sized for a company without a quality department, built so the aerospace layer can be added later without rework. See ISO 9001.
  • ISO 9001:2026 transition A gap analysis against the 2026 edition, then the leadership and quality culture evidence and the split between risks and opportunities. See the transition checklist.
  • One system, two certificates One set of procedures, one internal audit program and one management review, mapped to both ISO 9001 and AS9100D so each auditor finds the clauses they audit. See AS9100.
  • Internal audits Auditor-grade internal audits against ISO 9001, or against ISO 9001 and AS9100D in one pass, before the certification body arrives.
  • Gap analysis and roadmap Two to four weeks, fixed price, with the walkthrough on-site in Wichita.

Questions we get from Wichita companies

Should a Wichita company transition to ISO 9001:2026 now?

Not before your certification body can certify to it. ANAB issued Heads Up 564 on October 9, 2026: certification bodies declare their transition by June 30, 2027, and may not issue ANAB-accredited ISO 9001:2026 certificates until ANAB has made its decision and notified them. Existing ISO 9001:2015 certificates remain valid until September 30, 2029. You can start the gap analysis now, and it is worth doing early because leadership and culture evidence takes time to build, but schedule the transition audit once your certification body is approved.

We hold AS9100D. Do we also need to transition to ISO 9001:2026?

It depends on what your certificates cover. The ISO 9001 transition applies to ISO 9001 certificates. An AS9100D certificate follows IAQG's rules, and IAQG has not yet published IA9100 or a transition deadline for it. If you also hold an ISO 9001 certificate, whether issued alongside AS9100 or kept for a non-aerospace customer, that one has to move to the 2026 edition by September 30, 2029. Ask your certification body how it will handle the ISO 9001 part of a combined audit.

We are getting our first ISO 9001 certificate. Should we use the 2015 or 2026 edition?

Today, the 2015 edition, because certification bodies cannot yet issue accredited certificates to the 2026 edition. That changes during 2027 as bodies are approved, and from March 31, 2028, new certifications can only be issued to the 2026 edition. If your certification audit will fall in late 2027 or later, ask your certification body which edition it can certify to, and build to that one. Our 2015 or 2026 guide walks through the choice.

A customer asks for ISO 9001. Will our AS9100 certificate do?

Often, because AS9100D contains every ISO 9001:2015 requirement, but read the customer's wording rather than assuming. A clause asking for ISO 9001 or an equivalent quality management system is generally satisfied by AS9100. A clause naming a specific certificate may not be. If it is unclear, ask the customer's supplier quality contact before your next audit, so that a separate ISO 9001 certificate can be added at the same visit if it is needed.
