Most consultants tell Tulsa shops that ISO 9001 is the gateway to an API monogram. It is the other way round. One boundary first: Tulsa is also an aerospace town, and aerospace flow-down runs through AS9100, which we do not offer.
We are based in the Kansas City metro, and this market is a drive rather than a flight. That makes on-site work here a normal working assumption rather than a budget line. We do not maintain an office in this market and would rather say so than imply otherwise.
API and ISO 9001, in the right order
If you machine, forge, thread or coat anything that goes downhole, you know the API monogram is the credential that matters. What you may have been told is that ISO 9001 is the prerequisite for it.
That is backwards, and the correction is worth money.
The API monogram requires a quality management system conforming to API Spec Q1 — not ISO 9001. What API then does is publish, in its own APIQR Program Registration Requirements, this: “All Organizations that have achieved API Spec Q1 Registration may receive ISO 9001 registration for free once they demonstrate conformance to all applicable requirements.” API even publishes a combined audit form, FM-198, titled “Q1_ISO 9001.”
One audit can produce both certificates — though read API's wording carefully, because we have. It says a Q1-registered organisation may receive ISO 9001 registration for free once it demonstrates conformance to all applicable requirements. That conditional is doing real work: demonstrating ISO 9001 conformance can add scope and audit time. What it does mean is that a separate, parallel ISO 9001 project is very often unnecessary. Ask your registrar to confirm the combined route before you accept a second quote.
Two facts to get right while you are checking. API Spec Q1 10th Edition has been mandatory since 18 September 2024 — the 9th edition is no longer current, and the current document runs with Addendum 2 from June 2025. And the 10th edition aligns with ISO 9001:2015, where the 9th aligned with the long-obsolete ISO 9001:2008. That alignment shift is why the two audits can now share so much ground.

Where ISO 9001 genuinely is the hard prerequisite
There is one place in this industry where ISO 9001 is not optional, not bundled, and not a nice-to-have. That is ISO 29001, the petroleum, petrochemical and natural gas sector-specific quality management standard.
ISO/TC 67's own published rationale is explicit: ISO 29001:2020 supplements ISO 9001:2015. An organisation seeking it must comply with ISO 9001:2015 in full, and then satisfy the sector supplements on top. There is no alternative route and no equivalence provision.
So the honest map for a Tulsa manufacturer is three-layered. ISO 9001 is the base. API Spec Q1 sits beside it and carries the monogram, audited together with it if you plan it that way. ISO 29001 sits on top of ISO 9001 and is where the requirement becomes absolute.
Which of those you need is a question about your customers, not about your ambition. We would rather work that out in a first conversation than sell you the largest one.
What the supply chain here actually looks like in 2026
The metro has 1,108 manufacturing establishments, 1,003 of them with fewer than 100 employees (US Census County Business Patterns, 2023) — one of the highest small-establishment shares of any market we serve, at over 90 per cent.
The recent arrivals are not all energy. Quantum Space announced an $80 million spacecraft propulsion tank and precision parts operation in May 2026, with around 50 jobs and operations targeted for early 2027. Mecad USA announced its US headquarters and production at the Tulsa Port of Catoosa in February 2026, with nearly 300 jobs — that site is in Rogers County, inside the metro but outside the city. Park Aerospace announced a composite materials facility at Tulsa International Airport in July 2026.
It is not all growth. PepsiCo filed a WARN notice in July 2026 for 184 positions at its Tulsa bottling site — warehouse operations, with the production facility remaining. We mention that because a page that describes any city as uniformly booming was written by someone who did not look.
Three things about this market that are commonly written wrong
Spirit AeroSystems is no longer Spirit in Tulsa. Boeing completed its acquisition of Spirit's commercial and aftermarket operations on 8 December 2025, naming Tulsa among five sites folded in. Any 2026 page listing Spirit AeroSystems as a Tulsa prime is running on old research.
Magellan Midstream is not a Tulsa headquarters. ONEOK completed that acquisition in September 2023.
MidAmerica Industrial Park at Pryor, and the plants at Bartlesville and Muskogee, are not in the Tulsa metro. They are in the wider combined statistical area. It is a small distinction until someone quotes you an establishment count that includes them.
One more, on the regulatory side: Oklahoma has no OSHA-approved State Plan. Private-sector workplaces here fall under federal OSHA. That is worth knowing before anyone builds you an ISO 45001 compliance obligations register around a state programme that does not exist.
One boundary, because Tulsa is also an aerospace town
Three of the names above — the former Spirit AeroSystems site now inside Boeing, Quantum Space, Park Aerospace — are aerospace. Tulsa is one of the larger aerospace maintenance and manufacturing markets in the country, and we would rather say this at the point you are thinking about it than let you find out on a discovery call.
Aerospace supplier flow-down runs through AS9100, and we do not offer AS9100 consulting. Nor Nadcap. If your customer is naming either of those, you need a firm that does that work, and there are good ones.

A word on who accredits your certification body
This one is new and most people have not caught up with it. As of 1 January 2026, the International Accreditation Forum and the International Laboratory Accreditation Cooperation both ceased to exist as separate organisations and were replaced by a single body, Global ACI.
For an energy manufacturer this is more than trivia, because your customers' supplier qualification questionnaires very often ask whether your certificate is issued by a body accredited under a recognised arrangement — and a number of those questionnaires still name IAF. If yours does, the answer has changed and the correct reference has changed with it.
Whichever route you take — API Q1, ISO 9001 or both — the certificate is only worth what the accreditation behind it is worth. Checking that is a five-minute job and we do it before recommending a certification body.

Questions we get from companies in this market
Do we need ISO 9001 to get an API monogram?
No, and this is the most common misconception in this market. The monogram requires a quality management system conforming to API Spec Q1. What API's own registration requirements then say is that organisations holding Q1 registration may receive ISO 9001 registration at no additional cost once they demonstrate conformance — and API publishes a combined Q1 and ISO 9001 audit form. So the practical answer is that you can get both from one audit, in that order. If someone is quoting a separate ISO 9001 project alongside your Q1 work, ask them why.
Which edition of API Spec Q1 applies to us?
The 10th Edition, which published in September 2023 and has been mandatory for Monogram licensees and Q1-registered organisations since 18 September 2024, currently running with Addendum 2 from June 2025. The 9th Edition is not current. The distinction matters because the 9th aligned with ISO 9001:2008 and the 10th aligns with ISO 9001:2015 — which is exactly why the combined audit works now and did not before.
Where is ISO 9001 actually mandatory in oil and gas?
ISO 29001. ISO/TC 67's published rationale states that ISO 29001:2020 supplements ISO 9001:2015 — you must comply with ISO 9001:2015 in full and then meet the petroleum-sector supplements. There is no equivalence route. If a customer is asking for ISO 29001, ISO 9001 is not optional and the sequence is not negotiable.
Does Oklahoma have its own OSHA programme?
No. Oklahoma has no OSHA-approved State Plan, so private-sector workplaces fall under federal OSHA. Worth confirming before anyone builds you a compliance obligations register, because several consulting sites in this region imply otherwise.
Our customer's questionnaire asks about IAF accreditation. What do we say?
That reference is now out of date, though not through any fault of yours. On 1 January 2026 the International Accreditation Forum and the International Laboratory Accreditation Cooperation were both replaced by a single organisation, Global ACI. Certificates and accreditations issued under the previous arrangements remain valid; the name in the questionnaire is what changed.
